Does every artwork have a purpose? Should every artwork have a purpose?
As a future art teacher, I believe that the art you have your students create should have a purpose. That's what each objective is for in writing a lesson. It doesn't have to have a deep and meaningful purpose like explaining the meaning of life. It can be as simple as learning a new technique.
However, I feel that most students, especially at an art one level, will question the purpose. "When am I
going to use this in real life?" There may be some days when it is just not made clear, though. You have to may take some extra time to explain how art is used in life to make people grow.
As an artist, sometimes the things you make don't have a supreme purpose. You are simply creating to create. In my early college career, I made art for my teachers and for a grade. Now in upper level classes, I'm working with my professors to make work that has a meaningful purpose for me. I am currently exploring memories and the sense of finding home in my ceramics course. I am at a point in my life where I will be moving forward, so I can't help but look to the past to find some purpose and meaning.
