Finding a collaborative project for the classroom poses a challenge. However, once you develop a successful one, it is possible to adapt it to the various levels of grade school.
For the project above, 7 individuals were given a tempera color and a brush. They were instructed to place paint dot on a large sheet of paper. Then in a cycle the individuals would rotate and circle the dot, rotate again and circle the circle on repeat until the paper was filled.
For all adaptations I would create sections for groups of students to move around.
High School Adaptation - Encourage line patterns and color relationships
Middle School Adaptation - Representative color use for each student
Elementary School Adaptation - Color schemes

For the weaving above, individuals were instructed to make consistent width strips of scrap paper which will become the weft. The warp was precut for the individuals. While waiting for each person to weave in their strips, the others made there own weaving on a smaller scale.
High School Adaptation - Floor to ceiling semester long weaving. Use of traditional weaving materials. If students complete a task early, they can add to the weaving. They can pick a color that represents how they are feeling that particular day.
Middle School Adaptation - CD weaving. Created by each individual strung together.
Elementary School Adaptation - Very similar project. Create each weaving with smaller groups of 3 or 4.
